Rapidly developing technologies deeply affect the economic and social lifestyle of today's society. The most significant reflection of this in transportation area was the increase in mobility. Problems such as traffic congestion, increase in accidents and environmental pollution arise as a result of the increasing mobility, especially in the transportation systems that are developing mainly on highways.

"Sustainable Transport" which helps eliminate, mitigate, and at the same time support the development of the negative effects of increasing mobility, is the common goal of all societies. Given the scale and complexity of transport systems, it is difficult to achieve this goal without a serious technology-supported planning and management structure. As a solution, it is aimed to make use of the developments in various fields, especially the developments in information and communication technologies in the field of transportation, in other words, to develop effective and efficient Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

The aim of Intelligent Transportation Systems is to improve road safety, road capacity, mobility, travel comfort and speed, while reducing the negative effects of transportation on human, environment and energy resources, thus increasing the present and future productivity of individuals and institutions. For this reason, it is accepted as a prerequisite for the sustainability of transportation systems that people and institutions working in this field, as well as system actors consisting of physical and software elements that make up the technological infrastructure, work in harmony with each other.

ITS Türkiye was established on 15 March 2016 in accordance with an action included in the National Intelligent Transportation Systems Strategy Document 2014-2023 and Annex Action Plan (2014-2016) prepared by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. It was allowed to use the word “Türkiye” with the consent of the Minister of Interior on 8 November 2018. It is an inclusive and complementary association that gathers official institutions and organizations, commercial companies, non-governmental organizations, universities, software companies, municipalities and in short, all actors related to the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems under one roof so that these actors work in harmony with each other, speak the same language with each other, and produce products and services in line with the standards determined by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Thus, it contributes to the formation of a sector that will provide the highest efficiency from the labor force and financial resources of our country.

ITS Türkiye, which started its journey with 20 founding members, continues on its way in accordance with its founding purpose by getting stronger with its increasing number of members (click here to see the members).
