Şanlıurfa, popularly known by its short name Urfa or Decently known as Edessa, is the eighth most populous city in Türkiye. After the proclamation of the Republic, it became a province in 1924. The name of the province of Urfa was changed to Şanlıurfa with the law numbered 3020 published in the Official Gazette dated 22 June 1984 and numbered 18439. In 2016, the city was awarded the Independence Medal by the Turkish Grand National Assembly for the heroism shown by the people of Şanlıurfa in the Turkish War of Independence.

Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality works to make the transportation of the city better every day by signing many studies in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems.
