About the Member:

General Directorate of Highways (GDH) was established in 1950 under The Ministryof Transport, Maritime Affairsand Communications.  It is a legal entity with a private budget which consists of a central unit and 18 Regional Directorates, a Workshop Directorate and a Supply Directorate.

The main duties of GDH are to carry out the surveys of the roads decided to be built, to determine the corridors, to prepare the projects, to provide scientific and technological development related to construction, maintenance, repair and operations of the highway, to carry out R&D activities, to fight with snow, to carry out afforestation, landscaping and cleaning services along the road, to identify, to implement, and to supervise horizontal and vertical signs and illuminated and unlit signs, to carry out the works and operations related to the projects made and foreseen to be done, to ensure the maintenance and operation of highway bridges and tunnels with tolls.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are being expanded to provide safer and more comfortable travel on the road network operated by GDH. Works for the creation of an effective communication infrastructure on the highways, establishment of Intelligent Transportation Systems Centers and systems to be located on the highway routes go on.
